Portfolio for the Apocalypse|
Profit from Prophecy?
Q. Can prophecy experts predict a good stock and bond portfolio for our future? Since they know so much about what the Bible predicts can't they know this, too? (J.M., Mt. Vernon, WA)
Opportunities in Crisis?
With "tongue-in-cheek" we find that there ARE trends that emerge from the pages of the Bible. These trends are found in the biblical books of Revelation, Daniel, Isaiah and other parts of the Bible and could conceivably allow us to create a portfolio for the apocalypse. What we don't know for sure is the timing. Having said that, with a sense of humor and an inquisitive mind, let's begin.
No U.S. Stocks - Yes to Emerging Markets
Sadly, we don't see the United States playing a major role in end-times prophecies. Instead, it appears that the E.U., China, Asia and the Middle East will dominate the investing landscape.
Russia and China especially will become great military forces (Ezek.38&Rev.9). So I suppose underweighting the U.S. and overweighting "emerging markets" stocks is a good idea.
Transnational, Global Corporations Flourish
It appears that large, transnational, global corporations might flourish and do well for for the first half of the tribulation period, anyway.
This is because in Revelation 18 we find that "the merchants of the world have grown rich" (Rev. 18:3, NLT). When there is "weeping and mourning" it is because Babylon has been destroyed and there is no more luxurious trading of goods and services.
It seems that Israel will soon become a very wealthy nation. In Ezekiel 38:10-12 we find that Russia will invade Israel to steal her great wealth - a land with "vast amounts of plunder, for the people are rich with livestock and other possessions now" (Ezekiel 38:12, NLT).
With tongue-in-cheek we suggest that because of Israel's future prosperity our Reformed brethren may wish to modify their anti-Israel investment policy and consider investing in the future riches of Jacob. This would nicely round-out their apocalyptic-portfolio investments.
No Insurance Companies
With so many disasters looming on the prophetic horizon it appears that investments in insurance companies will become big losers. After all, insurance premiums can only cover just so many earthquakes, tsunamis, unforeseen asteroid-hits, a magnetic pole-shift or nuclear war as we possibly see described in the book of Revelation chapters 6-18 and Isaiah chapter 24.
Infrastructure Companies Benefit from Disasters
Instead, it may prove lucrative to invest in global infrastructure equipment-companies that will attempt to rebuild our devastated cities, major highways and utility companies. This is simply smart end-times investing.
Forget Hot Currency-Plays
I suppose we can forget about apocalyptic investments in those formerly "hot" global currencies. This market will become so chaotic that a one-world ruler will forge a brand new global currency. He will require all world citizens to accept something like a bio-chip implant for each and every citizen - probably to help prevent ID theft (Rev. 13:16-18).
Bio-Chip Verification Companies
This may mean that companies like those who provide computer implants for identification of livestock, could do exceedingly well in a global dictatorship that requires all humans to get the "mark" on the right hand or forehead (Rev. 13:16).
Dark Days of Hyperinflation
We know that the Black Horse of Revelation 6:5 portends terrible hyperinflation in our future. It is so awful that it probably leads countries to blindly follow the emerging dictator.
The apostle John hears the rider of the Black Horse proclaim, "A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius - and do not damage the oil and the wine" (Revelation 6:6, NASB).
It's helpful to know a denarius was a day's wage. So a typical blue-collar worker will labor all day just to feed himself - let alone take care of his family's needs.
We can forget saving for a rainy day, saving for college tuition for our youngsters, or saving for retirement. It will be all we can do just to survive.
No to most Financial Products&Institutions
This means we must avoid end-times investing in brokerage firms or banks who provide retirement services and savings plans. Instead, large, globalized firms may fare somewhat better in a portfolio for the apocalypse.
Precious Metals Investments?
One might think it would be prudent to collect precious metals to hedge against hyperinflation during the end-times.
However, Ezekiel warns, "They shall fling their silver into the streets and their gold shall become an abhorrent thing. Their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD" (Ezekiel 7:19).
Therefore, while precious metals might provide a temporary hedge against currency devaluations, it won't be a permanent solution to unstable currency fluctuations.
Real Estate Bust Continues
Zephaniah warns, "Moreover their wealth will become plunder and their houses desolate. Yes, they will build houses but not inhabit them and plant vineyards but not drink their wine…" (Zephaniah 1:13, NASB).
From Zephaniah's warning we can forget about apocalyptic-investing in hard assets such as real estate.
Perhaps we could learn to be more content with basic necessities such as "food and covering" (1 Timothy 6:8). What do you think?
Zephaniah continues with another shocking prediction:
"A day of wrath is that day, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness…I will bring distress on men so that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD" (Zephaniah 1:15-17).
This may mean that due to the darkening effects from a nuclear winter or perhaps a meteor strike, earth's inhabitants will need to try to survive through weeks or months of darkness. Just think - farmers won't be able to plant or harvest grains, and there may be no fresh fruits or vegetables available.
Possibly this means that strategic apocalyptic-investments in commodities such as freeze-dried foods, canned goods and companies that produce them, might be a wise investment.
In fact, acquiring, accumulation and storage of basic supplies such as foods could be a good plan for the apocalypse. But, remember that it will prove difficult to keep these supplies safe. After all, people will be so desperate that anyone who owns supplies will be at risk of robbery or worse.
Humorously we note that our Mormon friends who specialize in survival foods and equipment companies should do very well in such an environment. They may thrive during the darkest Tribulation days and their merchandise will be sorely needed for the survival of mankind.
Auctioneers and repossession companies may prosper after evangelical Christians are abruptly "snatched up" off the earth during the rapture (1 Thess. 4:17).
Surprisingly, world citizens may find that former Christian residents owned some of the finest luxury goods imaginable. After all, many followed the teachings of prosperity preachers and stored up all kinds of luxury goods in defiance of Jesus' teachings against materialism (Matt. 6:19).
In Revelation 6:8 the rider of the pale or green horse notes that there will be terrible pandemics and possibly bio warfare among the world's populations.
In fact, some biblical interpreters speculate that the killing from "wild beasts of the earth" (6:8) may refer to illnesses such as the Bird Flu, Swine Flu, AIDS caused by monkeys, Mad Cow's Disease and other diseases named after animals.
Bio Tech&Cloning Companies
Therefore, it would seem that bio-tech companies and certain drug manufacturers might do very well in the apocalypse - assuming they are not destroyed in earthquakes or other natural disasters.
In addition, once Christians have abruptly disappeared off the planet many left-behind citizens will seek desperate measures to preserve their own DNA and the lives and futures of their children.
In this environment entire populations will be at risk of extinction due to stunning disasters occuring one after another during the apocalypse (Rev. 6-18).
For this reason companies that specialize in cloning animals will be sought after to clone people, too. Anything to extend life, especially scientists who are able to provide a substitute for eternal life in the form of cloning, may do very well. Companies such as the former, now bankrupt Genetic Savings&Clone should thrive in this environment.
Using Leverage&Trading Futures
But, probably the best investment advice of all comes from Yeshua Himself! (Yeshua is Hebrew for Jesus). He advises His followers to use leverage and trade-up in the "real," lasting futures market before the apocalypse begins:
"Go, sell all that you have, give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come, follow Me" (Mark 10:21, ESV).
Unlike those unbelieving skeptics who are fighting to survive during the darkest tribulation days, Christians CAN take their most "prized" possessions with them when they die.
I'm ready to go. Are you? "Beam me up, Lord…I'm ready to leave earth before the apocalypse begins" (1 Thess. 4:17).
