Mathematical Concepts of Time

Are you having a hard time wrapping your mind around "trillions" of dollars in debt or "billions" of people on earth? Help your kids and try this:

1 million seconds = 12 days

It takes 12 days to equal one million seconds. If you add up one second each second it would take you 12 days to reach one million.

1 billion seconds = 32 years

It takes 32 years to equal one billion seconds. If you count one second each second it would take you 32 years to add up to one billion.

1 trillion seconds = 32,000 years

It takes 32,000 years to equal one trillion seconds. If you add up one second per second it would take you 32,000 years to reach one trillion.

True Meaning of Astronomical

Now explain to your children how many is "six billion" people on planet earth or "12 trillion" in government debt. These are truly astronomical figures!

Today we throw these numbers around as if they were meaningless. But, "astronomical" used to mean something so large it could only be expressed in terms of the universe.
