Whatever We Ask We Receive?

Q. Do we really receive everything we ask for in prayer like Mark 11:24 and 1 John 3:22 say?

Answer:

Good question. Let's look at some verses to help explain these passages.

1 John 3:22 says…if our hearts do not condemn us, we have confidence before God and receive from him anything we ask, because we obey his commands and do what pleases him (NIV).

A Blank Check to Ask For Anything?

Many Bible passages seem to say that "whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours" (Mark 11:24). But, does this mean we have a "blank check" to ask whatever we want and God will give it to us? No, of course not.

Wrong Motives

For example, the apostle James says "even when you ask you don't get it because your motives are all wrong - you want only what will give you pleasure" (4:3, NLT).

Pleasing Him

1 John 5:14 makes it clear that "if we ask anything according to his will he hears us." That means he hears us when we ask for those things that please Him. "Whatever" we ask we receive, means the "whatever" is in accordance with God's will.

Thy Will Be Done

Answers to prayers depend on asking for the right things. Those things must be lined up with God's Word. Jesus prayed …"Nevertheless, not my will but Thine be done" (Mark 14:36).

Bible Search&Godly People

How can we know what God's Will is?

By searching the Bible for answers (James 1:5-6).

By listening to what godly people say about the matter (Proverbs 11:14).

Finally, no matter what happens we can trust that God works everything together for our good (Romans 8:28).
