Peace&Safety?
Time to Look Up

The Gospel Rescue Mission in Grants Pass is blessed with great teachers. One is Barry Setterfield, a well-known astronomer who is quoted in scholarly books such as In The Beginning written by Walt Brown, Ph.D. and several books and DVDs published by Dr. Chuck Missler of Koinonia House. For those who don't know, Barry is one of less than a handful of scientists who calculated years ago that the speed of light is slowing down. In effect, the speed of light is not constant as once thought. Finally, scientists are beginning to accept it and the implications are widespread. (Check out Barry's website at Setterfield.org).

Messiah Coming Soon

But, Barry is also an accomplished Bible scholar whose keen mind sees things that we often overlook. Recently, Barry noticed that many world leaders have embraced the Iran nuclear deal and have repeated again and again that it will bring peace&safety to the region. Commenting on Joel Rosenberg's list of the number of times leaders have used the phrase peace and safety Barry notes,

…these comments may be Biblically important. Recall what is said in 1 Thessalonians 5:2, 3, 4&9. "For you yourselves know perfectly that the Day of the Lord [the Tribulation or the Wrath of God or the Indignation] so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say Peace and Safety! then sudden destruction comes upon them as a woman about to deliver. But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief. …God did not appoint us to his wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ." Therefore, this may be a sign that the Rapture is close.

Saying So Doesn't Make it So

Many Bible prophecy scholars have stated that Israel must be living in peace and safety before the Tribulation can occur. But, perhaps they are confusing the events of Ezekiel 38:11 when the enemy comes up against a land of "unwalled villages" with the cry of peace and safety in 1 Thess. 5:3. Therefore, some teachers claim that until peace in Israel is achieved biblical world events cannot proceed.

But, that is not what the passage says. Barry points out that 1 Thessalonians says, "When THEY (the world) say Peace and Safety, then destruction comes upon THEM." Christians are told, "But that day will not overtake YOU as a thief" (v. 4). In other words, we should be aware that there is no real peace and safety in Israel.

Nevertheless, most of us did not consider that world leaders might be stating that peace and safety is here when it is clearly not a reality. Saying that something has occurred does not make it so. When they say "Peace and Safety" then sudden destruction comes (1 Thess. 5:3).

The upshot? We think it's time to look up. The time is near. Christians are not appointed to wrath [another word for the Tribulation period] (1 Thess. 5:9). Our Messiah may be returning for His people soon! Be ready
