How is it possible? Q. If the Sons of God in Genesis 6 were fallen angels, how could they have children by human women? Matthew 22:30 says the angels don’t marry. Answer: Good question! For our readers, Matthew 22:30 says, For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven (NASB). Shape Shifters I think we need to consider changing our view of angels. In modern sci-fi terms angels are probably more like “shape-shifters.” Although they are spiritual beings angels can take on human form and minister to human beings. They can even eat our food (see Hebrews 1:14 and Hebrews 13:2). Spiritual Beings who can Eat & be Touched Remember that the word “spiritual” does not mean that spiritual beings are wispy, ethereal, half-real beings – or “spirits.” In His spiritual body our resurrected Lord said, See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself. Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have (Luke 24:39, NASB). Jesus proved He was a tangible being, someone who could be seen and touched. O.T. Angels who Dine or Touch Humans There are many Old Testament references to angels in human form who eat meals with men and who physically touch humans. For example, Jacob wrestled with an angel. Abraham and Sarah fixed food for visiting angels. Angels took Lot by the hand to get him away from Sodom before its destruction. These are just a few examples. I hope to convey that even fallen angels are real beings who possibly engaged in genetic-tampering with the human species. This behavior would have violated a God given directive. In fact, perhaps they are the “aliens” referred to in UFO literature. Who knows? Webster defines alien as: 1. Foreign 2. Not natural, strange 3. A hypothetical being from outer space That fits somewhat, doesn’t it? Jude’s Fallen Angels In fact, the author Jude in verses 1:6-7 has some very interesting things to say about these fallen angels. Verse 6 says: And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, Verse 7: Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh…(NASB) In looking over the NKJV, KJV, NASB, and ESV versions, verse 6 appears to imply that these sinning angels left their natural habitats and limits of their own authority and came to earth without permission. Verse 7 implies that they indulged in sexual immorality and went after strange flesh – or after beings not natural to them. According to the Ryrie Study Bible, the apocryphal Book of Enoch describes their dramatic end. If you don’t have the Book of Enoch, consider acquiring it for your library. Ryrie’s notes on 2 Peter 2:4 state, “These are the fallen angels who sinned grievously by cohabiting with women, as described in Genesis 6:1-4 (see Jude 6).” Spoilers of Messianic Bloodline Why would these sinning angels do this? They wanted to spoil the genetic bloodline from which the Messiah would come as foretold by the Old Testament prophets. This was their very real, physical intent at sabotaging God’s plan for humanity. Test-Tube Babies or Cloning? While Matthew 22:30 says that the angels neither marry nor are given in marriage, this does not necessarily mean that angels are incapable of producing children, nor does it say anything about the technology these angels may possess. Consider our own technology for artificial insemination or our newest attempts at cloning, for example. Both demonstrate that procreation is possible in unconventional ways. __________________________________ References: Missler, Chuck and Mark Eastman. 1997.
